We Went to a Wind Tunnel to Build the Fastest Unbound 200 Bike and This Is The Result

The Unbound 200 is the biggest gravel race in the world and as such I have left no stone unturned in my pursuit of building the fastest bike possible for the race. Some of these equipment choices might shock you but data and testing including time in the wind tunnel are behind all of them and that's what I get into in this video. I tested the first Lauf fork at Las Vegas Interbike many years ago, and LOVED IT. I was sad that I did not have a bike to put it on at the time or I would have bought one at the show. I have a fantasy gravel build I have been thinking about that includes one of those forks, I am very excited to hear that along with all the other benefits its also very aero.

    I got a new bike! I ran 25mm tires at 120 psi on my old bikes for many years. My new bike came with 32mm tires. I used a tire pressure calculator and I currently run them at 55/60. I don't think these tires roll faster, but they are much more comfortable on the chip seal road surfaces I ride around here. I'm old, so comfort is a priority.

    Just eat more beef. That will take care of it. Animal sourced iron is better absorbed than from plants, like spinach. B vitamins and vitamin C are important for iron absorption.

    Yup, I finally added weight training this year, two years after first seeing this video. It got me over a plateau in conditioning that I couldn't reach just by mashing bigger gears and standing to stomp up climbs. My recovery from hard efforts is quicker now. No idea whether functional strength training helps with longer rides, day after day. But it's helped with my mostly recreational and spirited group rides.

    If we were to have wider tire clearances, how does wheel compatibility keep up? Does the industry start producing 26-30mm internal width gravel wheels? Or lace up mountain rims to non-boost hubs? Or just go full boost spacing on gravel bikes so we can use standard mtb wheels. Relatedly, why are there no aero XC race wheels?

  • @osbogosley
    @osbogosley 4 дня назад

    Find a gradual climb and ride with one foot unclipped. Right foot then left foot. Don't overdo it the first time. You will have sore muscles the next day. Those are the muscles you haven't been using to round out your pedaling. Once those muscles are fit riding is the pack is easy. Your big sprint muscles will be ready when you need them. When I was 50 I was still very competitive in 30+ crits in Austin Tx. In a 5 week series I placed 3rd overall. That was 24 years ago. I was a 5' 8" lightweight climber that had to train for mostly flat races.

    In Norway simular trainings systems have been used since the late 60thies and early 70thies where Norwegians "always" have been among the best in the world in cross country skeeing and orienteering, among sports with the highest need fitness and endurance. And even if some would say that this isn't the most known sports around the world, the best orienteers always have been among the fastest track runners at the national level, even if they normally are running in marshes, mountains and the woods. In the mid 70thies a trainer introduced the trainings-systems from NZ by Peter Snell, and this wasn't falling much outside the training most of us followed in the national team in orienteering. But ofcourse we always were curious to see if something others in the training might peak our performance, and by curious people the training prinsiples have been developed through the decades, and never end😊.

    The variable pacing studies that looked at how best to pace yourself on hills were very short distance races. I don’t believe what works in a 10k time trail would hold true over 100, 150 or 200k races with lots of hills as the use of power over endurance distances should be different than the use of power over short sprint races/time trials.

    Hey Dylan, i haven't moved over to wax based lubes, but thinking having multiple chains waxed and ready, then swapping easily with quick links would be pretty time effective (allowing for multiple chain hot waxing with one prep). Making hot melt wax less of a chore is leveling this option with convenient liquid lubes that gives you the placebo peace of mind I get from doing my due diligence pre-ride chain lubing.

    A PM (coupled with a HRM) will be useful if you want to compare/analyze the load of different training sessions while training in very different environments in a short period of time (hometrainer, higher altitude, different bikes, different tires, different temperature). If you train for days, like most of us, on the same routes, same weather, with the same type of training sessions, comparing the average speeds will be largely enough to assess the quality of your training. As such, a PM is above all a useful tool for....your online coach as the online coach doesn't know your circuits and usual training environment. If you're your own coach, you can make do without. So Dylan is an online coach, so of course, for him it's better to follow your training if you get a PM....

    Every time I see a clipless vs flat. They both have thei pros and cons. Where flats seem to require less power and less power is produced (that is a weird sentence.). Clips have a higher required energy for the higher energy. Basically on hill climbs and level fields they produced the same effects. Meaning flats required less power over all to get almost the exact same stats but over all produced less power for a slower speed but would actually be close in time to the clipless. My theory is that flats require you to push THROUGH until you get every last bit of energy you can get to make the next leg push down to be easier. So it would need a higher start power force but be lower over a long distance while the clipless would need less energy to start up but require more energy over longer distances because you are no longer trying to get the max amount of angle in the pedal.

    To me this continues to be entertaining content. Hopefully one day people will have drones and ear pieces to communicate with coaches. Not that I wanna see the Tour de France style bike riding but if Dylan had at least two other guys that would do work for him he would be a contender for 1st next year. That being said I’d love to see some more fluidly in the feed zones. Sofia’s viral pit stop last year was spot on how it should be. Stay hungry Dylan, I believe you’ll be on the podium next year. Your gear was exactly what was needed and knowing the course from this year will make a huge difference.
